PyData Madrid 2016: Towards a full stack Python monitoring+analytics framework

Are traditional monitoring solutions ready for the software defined world (SDN/NFV) and the Internet of things (IoT)? Not always, in our opinion. In many cases they are not ready for the increasing flow of data originating from such a heterogeneous range of sources, in such diverse formats and through so many and diverse protocols.

Until now, most monitoring tools have considered analytics as a post-processing add-on, not an integrated part of the monitoring workflow. But we believe this has to change and the ideal would be to integrate analytics from the very beginning of the process, even to identify the Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) of your environment. Because in such an immense ocean of data, alarms based on applying static thresholds to isolated measures are not significant enough to characterize the monitored environment.

In this scenario, Python raises as an advanced player not only as it is strongly positioned in the race to become the state of the art in Big Data analytics but also because it offers a general purpose programming language, and today it’s difficult to find modern software projects not offering python APIs or connectors for easy integration.

Python’s success story cannot be understood without the huge community from the Open Source world.

And with the aim of collaborating actively and taking part in this community, on April 9th we are participating in pyData Madrid 2016 conference with a presentation titled Towards a full stack Python monitoring+analytics framework.

This speech is based on our experience from the past three years. BlueTC’s Innovation Team has been working for international customers on projects mainly related with three key fields: Openstack (NFV/SDN), Data Analytics and Real Time Systems Monitoring. We have been identifying shortcomings in the tools currently employed by our customers, and have designed specific solutions to encourage telco operators and network equipment vendors towards a monitoring and analytics framework really capable of facing the new challenges.

In this presentation, we will outline some tips to design a full stack Python monitoring and analytics framework, pointing to some of the most interesting tools and libraries for each of the components and technologies involved.

As a physicist, I started my career at the Nuclear Physics Group in the Universidad Complutense de Madrid where I became interested in the technical part of the work, linked to computational physics and Linux systems management.
In 2012 I left the academic world and I started working for BlueTC as an external consultant in Ericsson R&D. There I began to develop my activity mainly as a Python developer of automation systems and testing facilities for continuous integration. In December 2014 I joined BlueTC's Solutions area, where I started working on projects related to Openstack, NFV/SDN and integrating analytics solutions with traditional monitoring environments.
