In this globalised and digitised era where practically anything can connect to a network, no company is completely safeguarded against attacks. The “always connected” way of life where the limits between our private and professional lives are blurred, only adds complexity to the situation. Also, our daily business activity is based on technologies like mobility, IoT, cloud, virtualisation, artificial intelligence, etc., which forces us to make a bigger effort to protect assets, including customer and vendor data, oftentimes in an unknown and complex environment.

The industry currently leads the way in the development of new Use Cases within the Industrial Internet of Things, commonly denominated IIoT. The massive influx and consolidation of intelligent objects, i.e. sensors connected between each other and also with the data centres in the cloud, offers a great potential for producing and operating in more efficient ways. In this evolution, the technology that appears to be at the forefront is the so-called digital twin.

A digital twin is a replica of an IoT product that includes all its components, physical as well as digital, plus all the dynamics and interaction between them. This permits the analysis of an object in real time from a computer and without physically monitoring it.

This technology requires important investments, and thus, its adoption has so far been limited to leading industries, with examples from the machine and tool industry, manufacturers of heating equipment, engines, vehicles, etc. Despite this, according to Gartner, almost 50% of the companies that are implementing IoT already employs or are planning to create a digital twin. Also, the next generation networks, 5G, with its promises of super-fast connectivity and high latency, can only contribute to the development of new products or business models based on this innovative technology.

NFV Operations - DevOps Style – the BlueTC Value Proposition

The Internet of Things (IoT) is one of those important technological developments on which the digitial transformation process is based. Studies that predict an extremely rapid expansion frequently see the daylight, but in the real world the IoT technologies' trayectory can be compared to that of a boomerang.

Considerations-for-a-successful-900x600px-03.04.17jpg

Launching Voice over LTE (VoLTE) and Voice over WiFi (VoWiFi) has for some time been seems to be yet “another” large project operators are undertaking with more or less success and driven both by the need for operational efficiencies and customer demands.

The question is whether the colossal time and efforts that are being spent by operators to make the efficient IP-only LTE (or 4G) networks backward compatible will ever payoff? The main drivers seem to be efficiencies in spectrum and the promise of being able to provide convergent services based on IP. Moving voice calls to data networks at least in theory means a simpler network to manage and thus lower operational costs. Other industries such as digital and media have been successfully delivering these types of services for years, eating into the two cash-cows on which telecoms has been built, namely voice and messaging, only at a fraction of the investment.
